It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night. (Ps. 92:1-2 ESV)
The invitation to worship, O give thanks to the Lord!, is one of the most common commands in the Old Testament. But the Psalmist says here it is good to give thanks. What does he mean?
First, it is the right thing to do and therefore good. The Lord God is worthy and greatly to be praised. We find our highest purpose when we glorify him.
Second, giving thanks to God is good for us. To be joyfully thankful to the Lord for all his goodness puts us in a healthy, life-giving place. A safe place. A child’s place.
So this Thanksgiving week, take some time to quietly reflect on the Lord’s goodness and care of you all your life, how he has been faithful at every turn, how he has carried you life-long in his steadfast love and faithfulness.
And then give thanks!
