On the day before his crucifixion, Jesus drank from two cups. One cup is mentioned when Jesus was praying in the garden of Gethsemane while the disciples slept.

And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” (Mat 26:39 NAS)

What was this cup? It was the cup of God’s fierce wrath, the cup of God’s judgement on sin. It was the cup of our curse. And Jesus alone drank that cup. God gave this promise to his people through the prophet Isaiah.

Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God Who contends for His people, “Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of reeling; the chalice of My anger, you will never drink it again. (Isa 51:22 NAS)

The second cup he shared with his disciples in the upper room.

And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; (Mat 26:27 NAS)

What cup was this? Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians that it was the cup of blessing, the cup of salvation.

Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? (1Co 10:16 NAS)

The two cups go together. Christ drank the cup of our curse to the dregs so that we might drink the cup of his blessing.

This is the Great Exchange. Alleluia!
