“How can I know God’s will for my life?” This is a question I have been asked repeatedly through the years. Of course, many things are clear concerning God’s will.  Obviously when Jesus commands us to “Love one another,” this is God’s will.

But at the same time, we are each one different. We know for instance that it’s God’s will that we are to “Go and make disciples . . . and teach them to observe all He commanded us.” (Mat 28:19-20.) But here we tend to ask how more in terms of our personal context. Here the question is more like “What does this mean for me?”

The apostle Paul writes Thessalonian believers about their lives and response to God’s will.  Here he says,

This is the will of God, your sanctification . . . that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor. (1 Thess 4:3,4).

It seems here that Paul is saying that the key to answering our questions regarding our place in God’s will, is found in our being “set apart” for Him.   The answer is ours as each one of us, in our uniqueness, gives over more and more of our life to God. And here we will find the presence of the Holy Spirit guiding us, exposing our gifts and showing us our way.

Whose will do you live?

  1. I Thes 4.3 is the focus of the year in the church I attend here in Tucson. I’ve never focused beyond v 3- a good reminder to possess my own body in sanctification and honor. thanks, Curt.
